Understanding Wireless Networking



The understanding wireless networks course is designed to provide an awareness of wireless and Wi-Fi networks found in homes and small businesses. Learners will be able to describe the radio frequency (RF) signals and standards used in wireless and Wi-Fi networks, along with installations and mechanisms for managing the home network.  Finally, the key devices for home security and lifestyle networks will identified.

Module 01 Wireless Networks for Customers Premises

Upon successful completion of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Define wireless networks for customer premises.
    • Introduction to ZigBee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, long term evolution (LTE)/4G, 5G, etc.
  • Describe the unlicensed national information infrastructure (U-NII) and industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) frequency bands found in the RF spectrum that pertain to wireless networks.
  • Differentiate the agencies responsible for setting Wi-Fi standards.
  • Identify the basic types of antennas.
  • Identify wireless home networking devices for residential use.
  • Describe the application of Wi-Fi extenders in the network.
  • Explore the components of cable Wi-Fi and community Wi-Fi.
  • Identify commercial Wi-Fi deployment scenarios


Module 02 Residential Wireless Networks

Upon successful completion of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Identify the common styles for wireless customer premises home networks.
  • Describe initial considerations when a wireless broadband service is installed.
  • Define the various mechanisms for managing a customer premises home network.
    • Multimedia over coax alliance (MoCA) and Wi-Fi coexistence.
    • ZigBee and Wi-Fi coexistence.
    • Cabling the access point or gateway router using coaxial cable or twisted pair.
  • Differentiate the application of Wi-Fi mesh networks, extenders or range extenders
  • Differentiate between commercial and residential access point features.


Module 03 Digital Home Lifestyle and Home Security
Upon successful completion of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Identify components of a home security customer premises network.
  • Distinguish between the main wireless communication standards.
  • Identify important life safety devices and key lifestyle devices.
  • Describe installation procedures.
Understand how to troubleshoot common lifestyle and home issues.
